ALM Bulletin: May 2023

Welcome to the May 2023 bulletin which includes updates on information about the ALM 30 Conference where we will be considering plans for building ALM membership and networks with sister organisations.

The ALM Trustees are delighted to be returning to Ireland for our ALM 30 Annual Conference organised by a team of members from the University of Limerick who will be hosting the event, chaired by Niamh O’Meara. As well as having fascinating Keynotes, workshops and presentations, we will be holding a round table event with some past Chairs, reflecting on ALM’s development over the last 30 years, and its future possibilities.

ALM values its members and the support they give to the organisation. As such we are always interested in welcoming new members and trustees. We are a creative and welcoming trust board that that is always looking for new members and fresh ideas to keep the organisation current and relevant. Do come along to the AGM, meet some trustees and consider how your talents might contribute to ALM’s continuing global influence. If you would like to find out more please contact either myself at chair@alm-online.net or Catherine Byrne at secretary@alm-online.net or come and have a chat at the conference. I look forward to seeing you there.

The papers for the AGM will be available soon on the ALM-website http://alm-online.net/about/agm-documents/

ALM 30

Registration is now open for our 30th Adults Learning Mathematics conference, which will be held at the University of Limerick in Ireland, July 3rd- 5th, 2023. This promises to be an exciting event with a great programme of keynote speakers, workshops and research presentations. If you are intending to join us in Limerick, please make sure you register for the conference as soon as possible. The Early Bird reduced rate will end on May 31st so prompt registration is also going to save you money. You can check the conference fees and register for the conference on the ALM 30 webpage at https://alm-online.net/alm30_conference/.

Since this will be the last bulletin before the conference, please remember to keep checking the conference website where information will be updated regularly.

The main theme for the conference is Numeracy Theory and Practice in a Changing World, which reflects the need to consider the changing numeracy and mathematics demands on adults resulting from recent developments in different aspects of our lives. We are delighted to have a great line-up of keynote speakers who will cover a range of different issues related to the theme, including:
  • Why adult numeracy matters for active citizenship (Professor Merrilyn Goos)
  • ‘Travelling a Rocky Road’ – Insights into the impact of mathematics anxiety on adults’ mathematics journeys and how this can inform practice (Dr Maria Ryan)
  • Adult Numeracy in a Digital World: Challenges and Opportunities (Ms Colleen Dube)
A full programme will be available on the website before the conference, but the outline schedule is:
Monday July 3rd: 10:00 – 17:00 (with registration from 9:00 – 10:00)
Tuesday July 4th: 9:30 – 16:00 (with ALM Annual General Meeting from 16:00 – 17:00)
Wednesday July 5th: 10:00 – 13:30

There will also be a welcome reception on Sunday evening from 18:00 – 20:30, a barbecue on the Monday evening and the conference dinner on the Tuesday evening.

    Annual General Meeting

Our Annual General Meeting will take place during ALM 30 in Limerick on the July 4th. Papers and reports will be available prior to the meeting on the website. This is an important meeting where we will discuss future plans, including ALM 31, hear reports of ALM activity in the past year and elect our trustees. We would encourage members who are at the conference to attend and help make decisions that will affect the future of ALM.

    ALM 29

We are happy to announce that the ALM29 Proceedings are now available online. We want to thank everyone who contributed to making it possible. In the document, you can find the contributions made by those who participated in the conference and links to the plenary sessions. We hope you enjoy the proceedings, and they will be a source of new and valuable research for the future of our field.

    ALM Membership

The work of ALM is carried out by volunteers who give up their own time to plan seminars, arrange conferences and produce the ALM international journal. However, there are costs involved and we appreciate the support received from ALM members in the form of membership fees to enable this work to continue. If you are not currently a member of ALM, you can find further information about how to join on the ALM website at https://alm-online.net/become-a-member/. By becoming a member, you are simply showing your support for the work of ALM, which is a registered charity.

As explained in the previous two bulletins, from 2023 we have asked members to pay their annual membership fee in January each year. We are very grateful to all those who have done so. If you have not yet paid your 2023 fee but wish to continue as a member of ALM, we would welcome payment as soon as possible so we can produce accurate records of current membership before the Annual General Meeting in July. Anyone who is uncertain about their membership status or has any questions should contact the Membership Secretary at membership@alm-online.net.
