4. Secondary Teachers’ Perspectives on Mathematics Teaching for Newly Arrived Students in German Schools
The fourth virtual seminar will take place on Monday 25th April 2022 at 19h00 (UTC) equals 8PM (UK) equals 21h00 (CET).
Use this time zone converter for your local time.
Name of speakers: Gabriele Kaiser, Maike Lüssenhop (University of Hamburg)
Abstract: The increase in international migration and the global number of students learning mathematics through a language other than their home language makes immigrants’ educational pathways a particularly urgent issue. The presentation will focus on the German context and is based on qualitative interviews with mathematics teachers teaching immigrant classes. The central phenomenon that preoccupied all teachers was how to adapt mathematics teaching to the language- and mathematics-related diversity of their students while simultaneously helping students to meet the educational expectations the curricula or/and final examinations. Due to the lack of institutional support for the teaching in immigrant classes and lack of awareness in dealing with multilingualism and mathematics-related diversity in mathematics lessons, they were generally frustrated with the situation. Overall, the study points to the necessity of examining current practices of schooling immigrant children to contribute to more inclusive mathematics education.
Registration and further information: You canregister for this virtual seminar and check your local time at this page.

1. “How to encourage citizenship for democracy through mathematics”
– Exploring how mathematics can strengthen adults’ participation in formal and informal democracy”-
This virtual seminar took place on Monday 10th January 2022 at 19h00 (UTC).
Name of speaker: Lena Lindenskov (Denmark)
Abstract: Lena’s topic focuses on how teachers might strengthen adults’ participation in formal and informal democracy. She will explore the notion of democracy and its links to adults mathematics education, giving examples but also posing questions about how mathematics/numeracy teachers can develop democratic approaches in their teaching planning.

Bio: Lena Lindenskov is an Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Theory and Curriculum Studies, Danish School of Education, Aarhus University.
Her research focusses on children’s, adolescents’ and adults’ interest and difficulties in learning mathematics, and on mathematical/numeracy competence related to democracy. She has been involved in a number of European Union projects and conferences focusing on adults learning mathematics In addition, she participated 1999-2004 in developing the Danish national curriculum and teacher training for Preparatory Adult Education in mathematics, with Tine Wedege and Bjarne Sonberg. She has contributed to the Danish mathematics team in PISA 1999-2019.
2. Takeaways from the CERME12 conference
The second virtual seminar “Takeaways from the CERME12 conference” took place on Saturday 5th February 2022 at 14h00 (UTC)
This seminar showed the results of the Thematic Working Group (TWG) on Adult Mathematics Education at the 12th Congress of the European Society for Research in Mathematics Education (CERME12), 2nd to 5th of February, 2022.
Organisers of theTWG: Kees Hoogland (The Netherlands), Beth Kelly (UK), Fiona Faulkner (Ireland), Javier Díez-Palomar (Spain).
Abstract: This seminar was broadcasted from the closing session of Thematic Working Group (TWG) on Adult Mathematics Education of CERME12. This seminar showed the range of contributions from attendees, considering the breadth and depth of challenges faced by adults learning mathematics in different contexts as well as their motivations to engage with those challenges. As we are only too well aware many adults have had to deal with barriers to learning mathematics, whether cultural, political, emotional, educational, psychological, economic or social. The leaders of the group will present the work of the TWG in an interactive session.

3. What every (numeracy) educator working with (young) adults should know about Civic Statistics, and why
The third virtual seminar was offered and hosted by Adults Learning Mathematics (ALM) in association with the International Association for Statistical Education (IASE).
The seminar took place on Monday 14th March 2022 at 19h00 (UTC).
Name of speaker: Iddo Gal (Israel)
Abstract: This seminar focused on understanding ‘Civic Statistics’ which pertain to ‘hot’ domains such as health, crime, poverty, employment, income, (in)equality, environment, and other societal topics. Civic Statistics are of critical importance to societies and take central role in the news and in political life, yet many educators working in adult education (or in schools or colleges) are unfamiliar with their nuances and educational promise for developing statistical literacy and numeracy. We will illustrate the unique features of Civic Statistics, and discuss resulting implications for teaching practices and for promoting critical interpretation, and resulting research frontiers.
Bio: Iddo Gal is an Associate Professor (retired), Dept. of Human Services, University of Haifa, Israel. Iddo enjoys multidisciplinary interests, encompassing the conceptualization, development and assessment of adult numeracy, statistical literacy and related functional competencies; and management of service organizations and empowerment of workers and clients of service organizations. Iddo is a Past-President of the International Association for Statistical Education (IASE), has chaired the Numeracy Expert Group of the OECD Survey of Adult Skills (PIAAC), was a member of the ProCivicStat project (supported by the European Commission’s ERASMUS program), and has been working with UNESCO on developing frameworks for evaluating and enhancing adult numeracy for the U.N. Sustainable Development Goal 4.6.
