Can We Have Useful Conversations with Generative AI?
Exploring possibilities and limitations in adult mathematics education
Speaker: Charlotte Arkenback
Date: Monday October 19th 2026
Time: 7pm UK; 8pm CET
Abstract:
Generative AI can answer questions, generate ideas and produce explanations very quickly. But how can teachers work with AI in ways that support their own professional thinking rather than simply producing more answers? This seminar draws on two years of practice-based action research exploring the possibilities and limitations of developing conversations with generative AI in educational practice. The work has focused on practice rather than programming or prompt engineering. Through a concrete example from adult mathematics education, I will demonstrate a way of working with AI around an ongoing teaching project. Participants will then have the opportunity to try working with PRAXA and explore questions from their own teaching practice. A Padlet will provide access to materials and the AI demonstration. No previous experience with AI is required. Participants can simply follow the demonstration and discussion, or experiment themselves. Those who wish to work with PRAXA during or after the seminar will need a free ChatGPT account.
