The ALM bulletin is a bimonthly newsletter from Adults Learning Mathematics (ALM).

ALM is an international research forum bringing together researchers and practitioners in adult mathematics/numeracy teaching and learning in order to promote the learning of mathematics by adults.

ALM bulletin March 2026

Welcome to the ALM bulletin for March 2026. Over the coming weeks, there are some great opportunities to get involved in the ALM community, for example by submitting a session proposal for our annual conference, or participating in online discussions at various events, or contributing to the ALM International Journal. Whether you are a practitioner or researcher, your contributions will be very welcome.

In this bulletin we also include important information about the ALM conference to be held in Oslo, Monday June 29th to Wednesday July 1st, 2026, including the announcement of our keynote speakers and the deadline for session proposals.

Please read on for more information about our next two online seminars and a special workshop on using AI, which promises to be an exciting ‘hands on’ session. There is also a reminder about the call for papers for the ALM International Journal Special Issue on adult mathematics education in prison settings. If you have experience in this area, or know someone who does, this is a unique opportunity for sharing relevant research and practice.

ALM33 - session proposals and speakers

Conference dates: Monday June 29th - Wednesday July 1st 2026
Conference theme: Adults learning and using mathematics for responsible citizenship.

The conference will include opportunities to:
  • consider how the current era of political and socio-ecological challenges calls for responsible citizenship of all adults (16 years and above), whether they are learners, teachers, researchers, or otherwise
  • discuss what responsible citizenship may entail, like for example, “ethically caring for others and for the future” or “building a harmonious and sustainable society by playing an active role in both public and private life”
  • discuss how an education for responsible citizenship can be related to adults learning mathematics, adults’ numeracy and mathematical literacy, and vocational mathematics education
  • discuss how current research and practice might contribute to a future of adults learning and using mathematics for responsible citizenship.
It is now possible to submit your session proposal (250-350 words) for the ALM annual conference on the ALM33 webpage. Please do so by Tuesday March 17th.

We are very happy to announce the keynote speakers for ALM33:
Lonneke Boels, Catherine Byrne, Javier Díez-Palomar, Karolina Muhrman and Peter Frejd. We really look forward to their presentations, and the rest of the conference.

You can find further updates on travel, hotels and deadlines on the ALM33 webpage.

See you in Oslo!

Next ALM Virtual seminar

Date: Thursday March 19th 2026, at 7pm UK; 8pm CET.
Title: What happens when mathematics and craft teachers work collaboratively?
Speakers: Bettina Dahl Søndergaard and Lena Lindenskov (Denmark)

In a recent vocational education project (KLUMP) in Denmark, five collaborative teams at one of the largest Danish vocational schools, TRADIUM, were formed by pairing one craft teacher with one mathematics teacher. Each team developed and trialled teaching materials and lesson plans together. In this seminar Bettina and Lena will present results from the teachers’ experiences and reflections, highlighting key points about the collaborative process and outcomes. They will also share materials and lesson plans in English for discussion amongst seminar participants. Further information about the KLUMP project can be found, in Danish, in a project report at tradium-klump_c_samletrapport_ebog.pdf.

Please register here for this seminar. Registration will close on March 17th.

ALM Seminar

Title: Supporting Women’s Participation in Adult Mathematics Learning: Insights and Reflections from an Action Research (AR) study in England.
Speaker: Farhat Syyeda (UK)
Date: May 2026 (to be confirmed)

ALM Workshop

Title: Beyond Prompting: Rethinking AI in Adult Maths Learning
Facilitator: Charlotte Arkenback-Sundström.
Date: April 2026 (to be confirmed)

Generative AI is rapidly entering adult education, often framed as a tool for efficiency or content production. But what happens when AI becomes part of teaching and learning practices in real time? How can we move beyond prompting techniques and instead structure responsible and pedagogically meaningful interaction?

This interactive workshop introduces a practice-oriented approach to working with generative AI in adult maths learning. Rather than focusing on technical skills, we explore how dialogue between teacher, learner, and AI can be structured to support analysis, conceptual understanding, reflection, and professional responsibility.

Participants will be introduced to a three-level distinction (model, prompting, and interaction structure) and to a dialogical framework (PRIM) designed to clarify roles, responsibilities, and boundaries in AI-mediated learning situations. The session will include hands-on exploration with Nyx, a pedagogically structured AI assistant. Participants will experience how structured interaction can guide AI use toward transparency, shared responsibility, and critical reflection - particularly in contexts involving multilingual learners and diverse adult student groups.

No prior experience with AI is required. If you would like to participate actively in the hands-on session, you may create a free ChatGPT account in advance in order to interact directly with Nyx. Participation is also possible without an account.

ALM International Journal Special Issue

Journal title - Numbers Inside: Global Insights Into Mathematics Education for Students in Prison
Deadline for abstracts - March 31st 2026

Do you have experience of education in prison settings? The editors of the ALM International Journal are currently inviting contributions from researchers, teachers, managers, policymakers, and former students that explore the role and potential of mathematics within carceral systems across the world. Possible themes for papers will include: teaching innovations; policy and infrastructure; impact and outcomes; students’ perspectives; national and international comparisons; theoretical frameworks; and collaboration across disciplines.

Further details are available here.

ALM Membership

The work of ALM is carried out by a small group of volunteers who give up their own time to plan seminars, arrange conferences, write bulletins and produce the ALM International Journal. However, there are costs involved in maintaining our international presence and we appreciate the support received from ALM members in the form of membership fees to enable this work to continue.

Membership fees for 2026 were due on January 31st this year, so please could all members check that they have paid. If you are not currently a member of ALM, you can find further information about how to join here. By becoming a member, you are simply showing your support for the work of ALM, which is a registered charity.
