Introduction
Welcome to the May 2026 bulletin. I am looking forward to seeing many of you at our annual ALM conference in Oslo this summer. The conference provides a great opportunity to share ideas and debate issues with others who are interested in adults learning mathematics or numeracy in different settings, so please do try to attend. You can take advantage of the early bird rate if you register by May 31st.
At the conference we will also hold our Annual General Meeting, at which we review the year’s achievements and elect trustees to lead the organisation through the following year. The work of the trustees is vital to ALM and this year we will be aiming to elect two or three new trustees. Apart from attending a monthly meeting, most trustees take on a specific role, depending on their skills and the time they have available (e.g. website management, finance, writing the bulletin). We are particularly keen to have representation on the trustees from outside Europe. If you might be interested in becoming a trustee, or know of someone who might be interested, you are welcome to contact me at chair@alm-online.net and arrange an informal chat about the role before making a decision.
There are also opportunities to contribute in other ways, such as joining the virtual seminar team or editorial team, so please consider how you might contribute and drop me an email if you think you can help.

We are now approaching the final stages of preparation for the ALM33 conference, which will be held at OsloMet (Oslo Metropolitan University), Pilestredet campus, June 29th – July 1st, 2026. Thank you to all those who have submitted session proposals and to our keynote speakers for agreeing to lead the main conference sessions. We are delighted to welcome the following keynote speakers to ALM33:
- Lonneke Boels, a Senior Researcher at Hogeschool Utrecht.
- Javier Díez-Palomar, Associate Professor at the University of Barcelona.
- Catherine Byrne, a teacher of maths in Irish prisons for many years with interest in assessment, mathematical resilience, and maths life stories.
- Karolina Muhrman, Associate Professor at Linköping University, Sweden.
- Peter Frejd, Associate professor at Linköping University, Sweden.
Our keynote speakers will be discussing various aspects of mathematics education, based on their research and experience, including new initiatives as well as reflections on what we have learned. Whether you are a regular attender or thinking of coming for the first time, ALM conferences are a great opportunity to discuss key issues in adult mathematics and numeracy education, and you can be assured of a warm welcome.
If you are planning to attend the conference, you need to register now by using the links and guidance on the website. Most city centre hotels are within a short walk or tram-ride away from the OsloMet Pilestredet campus. The closest hotels to the conference are at Holbergs Plass. ALM Membership
Becoming a member is a way of showing your commitment to the aims and work of ALM. Members pay a small annual fee, which is due in January each year. We would be grateful if all members who intend to continue their membership would check that they have paid their 2026 subscription, so that the trustees can produce an accurate membership report for the AGM.
