The ALM bulletin is a bimonthly newsletter from Adults Learning Mathematics (ALM).

ALM is an international research forum bringing together researchers and practitioners in adult mathematics/numeracy teaching and learning in order to promote the learning of mathematics by adults.

ALM bulletin November 2025

This edition of our regular bulletin comes with plenty of opportunities to get involved with the ALM international forum. A new series of online seminars is about to commence, starting this time with a session focused on ALM Topic Groups. These groups include the already well-established Maths in Prison group and three proposed additional ones that will build on topic discussions from ALM 32. You can read more about these below. If you would like to be associated with one of these Topic Groups but are unable to attend the seminar on December 10th, you are welcome to email me at chair@alm-online.net to express your interest and ensure you are included in further communications regarding your chosen group.

Our second seminar, on 15th January 2026, will be led by Anders Wiik from Norway. Anders will be sharing about a fascinating study of mathematics in the media, so please note the date and watch out for further announcements about registration.

I would also like to remind you that we hope to dedicate space on our website for projects with a focus on Adults Learning Mathematics and would welcome suggestions. This could include national and international studies (past and present) as well as smaller local projects and relevant doctoral theses. If you are aware of projects that could be of interest, please could you email the ALM Chair at chair@alm-online.net with your suggestions, including if possible a link to the project website or a short summary.

Please don’t stop here – there is more in this update that might be of interest!

ALM33

It’s time to book your trip to Oslo, Norway for our 33rd Adults Learning Mathematics conference. The conference will be held from Monday, June 30th to Wednesday, July 1st, 2026. ALM33 is a conference for researchers and teachers in the field of adults learning mathematics (16-years and older), including numeracy and mathematical literacy in contexts such as community education, vocational education, further education, technical and professional training, prison education, and the learning and use of mathematics in workplaces or adults’ everyday lives.

The Conference Chair will be Associate Professor Trude Sundtjønn, Oslo Metropolitan University, trusun@oslomet.no. Our proposed conference theme (to be confirmed) is “Adults learning and using mathematics for responsible citizenship". Please start thinking about whether you could offer a session at ALM33. This could be either a research presentation or a workshop. Further details, including how to submit a session proposal, will be added to the ALM website once confirmed.

Virtual seminar - Wednesday December 10th 2025

Time: 6pm (UK); 7pm (CET)
Led by: Catherine Byrne, Diane Dalby, Javier Díez-Palomar, David Kaye, and Trude Sundtjønn

Following from the success of Topic Group discussions at our ALM 32 conference, this seminar will take the form of exploratory discussions in four different Topic Groups, including the well-established Maths in Prison group and three further groups: Teaching Numeracy to Adults; Theoretical Perspectives and Maths in and for the Workplace. After a short introduction, we will divide into groups and engage in focused discussions about the development of the Topic Group, building on foundations already established and identifying relevant 'hot topics' for future discussions. Further information can be found on the ALM seminar page.

This seminar provides a great opportunity to engage with other teachers and researchers who share your interests, and to get involved in meaningful discussion. Participants will be asked to commit to a single Topic Group and should therefore select the most relevant to their work and interests when they register.

Please register now using the link here.

Virtual seminar – Thursday January 15th 2026

Time: 7pm (UK); 8pm (CET)

Anders Wiik (Norway) will be leading this seminar about “Mathematics in the news: What can weather forecasts and corona diagrams tell us about everyday mathematics?” As he explains, numbers and graphs in the news are a prominent form of everyday mathematics that is of great importance for participation in democratic processes and social issues. Nevertheless, many adults have challenges in taking part in this discourse.

In this presentation, Anders will present some of his doctoral research, where he looks more closely at how mathematical representational forms in weather forecasts have changed between 1945 and 2020, and what opportunities and challenges arise in young adults' encounters with numbers and graphs from the news related to the corona pandemic. He will also talk about reactions he has received from parents, teachers and individuals who have read about his research.

Registration will open in mid-December so please watch out for a further announcement.

ALM International Journal

We are delighted to welcome Fiona Faulkner (Ireland) to the ALMIJ editorial team. The team are also pleased to announce that DOI numbers can now be added to individual journal papers and these will be appearing soon for the latest issue on the website.

The editorial team and ALM Maths in Prisons topic group are currently working on a special issue about adults learning mathematics in prison settings. If you have ideas for a relevant paper for this special issue, either a research or practitioner paper, please do get in touch with Catherine Byrne at secretary@alm-online.net. You might also find it useful to look at the guidance available about writing and submitting a paper to the ALM International Journal at https://alm-online.net/alm-journal/.

Could you host a future ALM conference?

Whilst seeking to make use of online opportunities for our ALM community to meet, for seminars or conferences, the ALM trustees are still keen to offer face-to-face ALM conferences, even if it is not possible to do so every year. We are therefore looking for venues around the world, preferably at low cost and with accessible travel options. If you might be able to host an ALM conference in the future or would just like to have a chat about what this involves, please contact Diane Dalby at chair@alm-online.net.

Future bulletins

We hope that you are enjoying the regular ALM bulletin. If you have news from your part of the world or know of projects that may be of interest to our international community, please email the information to Lena Lindenskov at lenali@edu.au.dk by January 1st 2026 for the next bulletin.
