The ALM bulletin is a bimonthly newsletter from Adults Learning Mathematics (ALM).

ALM is an international research forum bringing together researchers and practitioners in adult mathematics/numeracy teaching and learning in order to promote the learning of mathematics by adults.

ALM bulletin May 2025

Welcome to the May 2025 bulletin, in which you will find updates on ALM activities and other items of interest to those involved with adult learning of mathematics in various contexts. At this time, as we look forward to our annual conference, it is also time to review our achievements in the last 12 months at our Annual General Meeting and elect trustees to lead the organisation through the following year.

The work of the trustees is vital to ALM, and the organisation is currently very dependent on the expertise of a small but very committed team. Apart from attending a monthly meeting, most trustees take on a specific role, depending on their skills and the time they have available. I am very grateful for all the (unpaid) work that is done by our current team, but we would welcome new trustees, especially ALM members with good technical or organisational skills to help with some of the tasks that are essential to maintaining our international presence.

Alternatively, if you are unable to commit to being a trustee, there are plenty of other ways in which members can contribute. For example, the editorial team are keen to recruit one or two new members, and the virtual seminar team would appreciate extra support. We would also like to hear from anyone who might be interested in hosting a future ALM conference or leading a seminar. Please take a look at the website for more information or, if you would like to have an informal chat about what one of these roles might involve, please contact Diane Dalby at chair@alm-online.net.

ALM Annual Conference

We are now approaching the final stages of preparation for the ALM32 conference to be held at the University of Nottingham, UK, July 9th-11th. Thank you to all those who have submitted a session proposal and to our keynote speakers for agreeing to lead the main conference sessions. We are delighted to welcome the following keynote speakers to ALM32:
  • Diana Coben (Emeritus Professor of Adult Numeracy, King’s College London, UK)
  • Jeremy Hodgen (Professor of Mathematics Education, University of Nottingham, University College London, UK and Norwegian University of Science and Technology)
  • Paul Milner (Programmes Director; National Numeracy, UK)
  • Andrew Noyes (Professor of Education; University of Nottingham, UK).
Our keynote speakers will be discussing various aspects of mathematics education, based on their research and experience, including new initiatives as well as reflections on what we have learned. Whether you are a regular attender or thinking of coming for the first time, ALM conferences are a great opportunity to discuss key issues in adult mathematics and numeracy education, and you can be assured of a warm welcome.

If you are planning to attend the conference, you need to register now by using the links and guidance on the website, noting that the conference fee increases after May 31st. If you are intending to stay on site, the Jubilee Conference Centre hotel is currently offering a special rate for ALM32 delegates, but this offer only lasts until May 23rd. Details are also on the ALM32 webpage.

Annual General Meeting

Our Annual General Meeting will take place during the conference. A formal announcement of the AGM will be sent to members in June and papers will be available on the ALM website prior to the meeting at http://alm-online.net/about/agm-documents/. We would encourage all ALM members to show their support by attending this meeting and demonstrating their commitment to the future work of ALM. Those who are unable to attend in person will be able to join via Zoom.

ALM30 and ALM31 conference proceedings

The trustees are happy to announce that both these publications are now ready and will be available on the website very soon. We are grateful to the ALM trustees and members who have worked hard to produce these, especially Trude Sundtjønn, Javier Diez-Palomar and Niamh O’Meara.

New Journal articles

The editorial team are pleased to announce the publication of three new ‘online first’ journal articles.
• Ngoveni, M.A. Enhancing financial literacy for national curriculum (vocational) mathematics students: A design-based approach using Newman’s Error Analysis.
• O’Hanlon, A. The influence of the teacher as a source of mathematics anxiety for adult learners in Further Education and Training.
• Burazin, A., Gula, T. & Lovric, M. Examining the effectiveness of the numeracy course ‘Numbers for Life’ at McMaster University.
The first two of these are already on the ALM journal webpage at https://alm-online.net/alm-journal/ and the third will be available shortly.

Project news

Members have recently highlighted the following publications and projects that are relevant to ALM. We only include brief information here but there are links to follow if you would like to know more.

The film Counted Out at https://www.countedoutfilm.com/ has been highly recommended. This film is dedicated to Bob Moses, the civil rights leader and MacArthur genius who saw math access as the civil rights issue of our time, and whose work is discussed in some of the last filmed interviews of his life.

You may also be interested in the aims and results of a project about the expression, experience and transcendence of low skills in Aotearoa New Zealand. You can find more information about this at https://nzpri.aut.ac.nz/research/low-literacy-and-numeracy-research.

The new KLUMP teaching materials for vocational education in Denmark are about to be published. The materials have been developed and trialled in collaborative teams of one handicraft teacher with one mathematics teacher. Some results and materials from the KLUMP project will be translated into English during Autumn 2025. ALM Membership

Becoming a member is a way of showing your commitment to the aims and work of ALM. Members pay a small annual fee, which is due in January each year. We would be grateful if all members who intend to continue their membership could check that they have paid their 2025 subscription, so that the trustees can produce an accurate membership report for the AGM.

ALM Virtual Seminars

The ALM virtual seminar series for 2024/25 has come to an end but you can still watch previous seminars on our ALM YouTube channel. Our thanks go to all the presenters who have contributed to this year’s series, especially those responsible for our final two seminars in April:
  • Dave Tout (ACER and University of Melbourne, Australia), Javier Díez-Palomar (University of Barcelona, Spain), and Kees Hoogland (HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht, The Netherlands) for their seminar Numeracy in the OECD’s 2023 Survey of Adults Skills (PIAAC Cycle 2); and
  • Pauline Vos (Western Norway University of Applied Sciences) for her seminar Out of the mathematics classroom – towards a better understanding of adults’ informal and implicit learning of mathematics in everyday and workplace situations.
